Johnny Murphy

Who I am:

I’m the kind of person you don’t mind sitting next to on a plane but someone you definitely don’t want to play Monopoly with. I love having fun, bringing people together, and making memories out of ordinary experiences! I’m a husband to a top-tier, 5-star, one-of-one wife. I’m an aspiring cool uncle and a sucker for a blockbuster action movie. I love endurance events and doing things that challenge my mind, body, and spirit. I’m an IRONMAN, and a breakfast food fanatic. I’m a dog person and a comic book collector. I’m a die-hard Chicago Bears fan, and it shows. The most important thing to know is that I’m a follower of Jesus who grew up in the church, and I’m a sinner who is just so grateful that He who began a good work in me is faithful to finish it.

What I do:
I’m an Associate Pastor overseeing the assimilation process at Soma Church, helping people move from the parking lot to being fully connected in our community. I lead our Physiology class for new members and help guide people into the discipleship and community opportunities available at Soma. I also oversee our missions and outreach efforts and contribute to the overall vision and direction of our Men’s Ministry.
What I’ve done:

After graduating from high school, I joined YWAM (Youth With A Mission), where I completed several training programs that equipped me for missionary work and provided valuable field experience. During that time, I met Taylor (my top-tier wife), and together we served as missionaries, leading training programs throughout East Texas for several years.

In 2019, we decided to make East Texas our home. I began working with Mercy Ships, a nonprofit organization that provides life-changing medical care across Africa through hospital ships. During my time there, I served donors, managed teams, and primarily led the onboarding and training program for new volunteers. My role focused on welcoming people into the organization and helping them align with its mission and values.

Through each of these experiences, I’ve been incredibly blessed to grow my worldview through cross-cultural ministry and leadership opportunities. Along the way, I’ve learned that leadership is ultimately about serving others well and helping people thrive in their God-given purpose.
